Arthritis FAQs

What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is when tenderness and swelling occurs in one or more joints in the body. Symptoms of arthritis are usually joint pain and stiffness. There are more than a hundred different types of arthritis, but the two most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that causes the immune system to attack joints in the body.

What Are Common Causes of Arthritis?

Osteoarthritis causes cartilage to break down. Osteoarthritis is more common as you get older, but it is not considered a normal part of aging. You may be more likely to experience arthritis if you have risk factors like a history of joint injury or trauma, repetitive stress on a joint, obesity, or family history. Other types of arthritis include gout, an autoimmune condition called rheumatoid arthritis, or even juvenile arthritis.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Our team will use chiropractic adjustments to reduce the pain and discomfort of your arthritis. Chiropractic adjustments reduce restriction and misalignment in the spine and other joints in the body. We will gently manipulate your soft tissue to stop muscle spasms and relieve tenderness. This helps to reduce inflammation and improve function in the affected joints.

We can also use active exercises to slowly stretch the joints and increase your range of motion. We may recommend an at-home exercise routine to help reduce pain and to continue stretching the affected joints. Better joint mobility helps to manage symptoms caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

Cold laser therapy may be used to treat joint pain. The light penetrates your skin to heal the cells and surrounding tissue. It helps to increase blood flow, decrease pain, speed up healing, and reduce swelling from arthritic joints. Cold laser therapy is often combined with chiropractic care when treating arthritis.

How Does Nutritional Care Help?

Our team will help you choose a healthy diet and recommend supplements that help manage arthritis. This diet will include fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, beans, and whole grains. We will help you cut back on salt, fat, sugar, alcohol, high-fat meats, processed foods, and gluten. All of these can contribute to inflammation. Diet and exercise are an important part of treating your arthritis.
