What Is a Concussion?
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI. It is caused by any type of rapid movement which forces the brain to move inside the skull. This is usually caused by a hit, a fall, or a bump to the head. This sudden movement can cause damage to the brain. This damage can in some cases leads to changes in the brain both chemical and cellular.
What Are the Symptoms of a Concussion?
Concussions range in severity. A very mild concussion may manifest no symptoms at all, while a more severe event could result in hospitalization. The most common symptoms of a concussion are:
- Blurred vision
- Pressure in the head
Some of these symptoms manifest immediately following the injury, but others may not show up for hours, days, or weeks. When symptoms are persistent over a long period of time, a patient may have what is known as Post-Concussion Syndrome. This condition can interrupt a person’s life indefinitely.
If these symptoms are manifesting, it is advised to seek medical help immediately.
Can a Chiropractor Help?
Chiropractic care aims to treat conditions from a holistic view point. Rather than simply using medications to treat the symptoms of the problem, chiropractic care seeks to treat the root of the problem so that the symptoms go away.
The impact which causes a concussion will also have an effect on the spine. Any type of sudden movement or trauma can move the vertebra out of alignment. This misalignment will then begin to manifest as problems elsewhere in the body. Bringing the body back into alignment can often help to alleviate some of the symptoms of this condition. It is important to note that a concussion should be initially evaluated by a medical doctor, as this condition is considered a brain injury. However, following a visit to your regular doctor, a chiropractor can help with many of the peripheral problems resulting from an injury which causes a concussion.
