Chiropractic Care for Spinal Stenosis

What Is Spinal Stenosis?

Your spine consists of a bones’ column called the vertebrae that support your upper body giving you stability. It enables you to turn or twist. Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of this column of bones; thus, the spinal cord becomes compressed. When the spine narrows slightly, there are no symptoms.

However, if the narrowing is excessive, it can compress your nerves resulting in problems. Due to the compression of the nerve root and the spinal cord in the vertebrae, the spine cannot perform its function efficiently. It can lead to various problems, for instance, in walking, sensation, and balancing issues.

While spinal stenosis can affect any part of the spine, its severity varies. However, it occurs mostly on the neck, i.e., cervical spinal stenosis or the lower back, which is known as lumbar spinal stenosis. Neck pain, lower back pain, balancing problems, and sciatica are some of the spinal stenosis symptoms. Other names used in place of spinal stenosis include pseudo-claudication, foraminal spinal stenosis, and central spinal stenosis.

What Causes Spinal Stenosis?

There are many causes of spinal stenosis but all lead to one thing, i.e., narrowing of the spinal cord. They include:

Osteoarthritis

Also known as arthritic spurs or bone overgrowth, osteoarthritis breaks down the cartilage (protective layer) in the joints and the spine. Wearing away of this protective cover causes the bones to rub each other. The body, in turn, starts to grow new bone. Bone overgrowth/ bone spurs on the spinal cord elongate to the spinal canal. It, in turn, compresses the nerves. Paget’s bone disease can also lead to spine bone overgrowth.

Bulging Disk

The vertebrae disk between each vertebra provides shock absorption to your spine. These disks may flatten or dry out, causing them to penetrate through a torn or weak outer layer. This bulging effect presses the nerves surrounding the disk.

Spinal Injuries

Breakage/dislocation/inflammation around the spine may narrow the spinal canal.

Congenital Spinal Stenosis

Congenital spinal stenosis is a condition where a person is born with a tiny spinal canal. Scoliosis is also a congenital spinal deformity that can lead to spinal stenosis.

Other causes of spinal stenosis include spinal cord tumors or cysts, thickened ligaments, spine defects at birth, and achondroplasia.

Diagnosis

Our chiropractor Dr. Mohamed Raychouni approaches this condition holistically. He considers the symptoms you have, how you feel, the present state of your spine, factors that cause your symptoms worse or better, and the tasks you feel comfortable performing. He will ask for an X-ray or CT scan, or MRI to check which part of the spine is affected by this condition.

Treatment

Our chiropractor will then develop a treatment plan for you, depending on the extent that spinal stenosis has affected your spine. Below are the different chiropractic techniques he may use during your treatment sessions.

  • Spinal adjustment
  • Massage therapy
  • Stretches and exercise
  • Flexion/extension techniques
  • Ultrasound therapy
  • Electric stimulation
  • Lifestyle advice
